One of the greatest barriers to successful interpersonal relationships is the inability to understand and accept individual differences. Developing the ability to appreciate and adapt to different styles of human behavior can have important benefits. Acquiring the necessary skills for establishing healthy interpersonal relationships early in life can significantly influence the quality of one's relationships throughout a lifetime.
For many years, business and industry have supported people-skills training for employees in order to enhance quality and worker satisfaction, and increase productivity. The DiSC® Classic Personal Profile System, a behavior assessment instrument based on the DiSC® Dimensions of Behavior model and researched and developed by Inscape Publishing, Inc., has been one of the most successful tools used for this purpose. Using DiSC Classic, individuals gain a more in-depth understanding of self and how to relate more effectively with one another. Adults who have participated in training based on the DiSC Dimensions of Behavior model consistently report that they feel more confident in their ability to experience success in relationships.
Positive interpersonal skills can be learned at any age. The same concepts and principles that have helped adults gain insight into their inter-relational behaviors have been adapted in the BEING YOURSELF® Curriculum. The curriculum uses the I-Sight®self-learning instrument. This instrument, printed within each participant workbook, is based on the Dimensions of Behavior model and was developed by Inscape Publishing, Inc. for use with adolescents.
Young people who participate in the BEING YOURSELF Curriculum series will develop a better understanding of how they relate to others and different situations. They will learn how to recognize personal strengths and weaknesses, and how individuals with various behavior patterns relate with one another. This learning will provide a basis for developing useful interpersonal skills that can be applied at home, in school, at work, and throughout life.
The curriculum specifically focuses on developing enhanced self-awareness and self-management competencies as well as laying a foundation for improved social skills. It is hoped that young people will gain a realistic perspective of self as well as a greater understanding and tolerance for those who are different from them.
The BEING YOURSELF Curriculum has been written as ten one-hour lessons that can be taught in a regular classroom or in a small-group setting. If desired, the lessons may be expanded by: 1) incorporating additional appropriate materials that support the intent and content of the curriculum, or 2) allowing additional time for discussion of lesson topics that are of particular interest to the participants.
The curriculum materials address important and timely concepts that can be easily applied to everyday life. Exercises are presented for developing self-awareness, improving communication skills, and encouraging honesty and integrity in relationships. The group activities are organized around a variety of teaching techniques that engage the participants in active learning. All lessons are appropriate for mixed or same-gender groups. Each of the lessons addresses a specific area of learning that leads to a better understanding of how individual differences can be used for maximum benefit.
The BEING YOURSELF Curriculum should be taught as a unit. The ten lessons build sequentially as important concepts are introduced in a particular order. The curriculum uses the I-Sight instrument to allow participants to self-assess the degree to which they naturally exhibit each of the following four dimensions of behavior:
