The challenge for most organizational leaders is “how to get all employees to be personally responsible”.  Especially when so many employees seem to want to avoid responsibility!  They often make excuses or look for someone to blame when they don't achieve expected results.

Part of the problem is that many leaders believe they can get people to be responsible by holding them accountable.  The assumption being that if I hold you accountable you will accept responsibility and be accountable.

It doesn't work that way!  Demonstrating personal responsibility is something people have to choose to do.  When they make that choice, they will be accountable.  The key for a leader is to create a workplace environment where people want to work,and choose to be accountable.

Many leaders fear that if they allow people to choose what they will be accountable for, they will choose to do less than the organization needs them to do.  In fact the opposite is true.  When given a great place to work; employees will choose to produce far more than could ever be achieved by striving to hold them accountable.
